Ethics policy
The ethical commitments our journalists follow, covering conflicts of interest, gifts, political activity, sourcing and treatment of vulnerable people.
Our journalists commit to the following principles.
Conflicts of interest
Journalists do not cover people or organizations with whom they have a personal, financial or family relationship. Potential conflicts are disclosed to an editor, and where relevant to readers.
Gifts and travel
We do not accept gifts, free travel or payment from people or organizations we cover. Review products are borrowed and returned, or purchased.
Political activity
Our editorial staff do not campaign for candidates or causes, donate to political campaigns, or hold political office.
Treatment of sources and subjects
We treat the people we report on with dignity. We take particular care with children, people in crisis, survivors of violence and people who may not understand the consequences of speaking to the media.
Payments
We do not pay sources for information.
Accountability
Readers can raise concerns about our conduct by writing to the address on our contact page. Complaints are reviewed by an editor — wherever possible, one who was not involved in the article.
